Spiritual Guru
Sri Appagaru was initiated into the CHISHTI-NIZAMI order by Hazrat Khwaja Mohiuddin Chishti who belonged to a near-by village Manthur Sharif. Hazrat Khwaja Mohiuddin Chishti was a scholar in Persian, Urdu and Telugu languages and used to run a school in Hunnapur village, where Sri Appagaru was admitted when he was 5 years old. After his initiation at a very young age (22 years), In January 1937 CE Sri Appagaru was busily engaged in meditation practices.
After the demise of his spiritual Master Hazrat Khwaja Mohiuddin Chishti in September 1938 CE, Sri Appagaru came under the influence of another saint Hazrat Ghulam Rasool Khwaja Nayab Chisht Linga Shahid-e-Naaz Qalander-e-Mirzai who was co-disciple (Peer Bhai) of his earlier Spiritual Master Hazrat Khwaja Mohiuddin Chishti and khalifa (vice regent) of Hazrat Syed Abdulla Hussaini Chishti Qalander-e-Mirzai, syedpally Sharif, Hyderabad District.
Sri Appagaru had intense love for his spiritual Master Hazrat Ghulam Rasool Khwaja Nayab Chishti. He fasted very often or ate very little, kept night-long vigils and engaged himself in strenuous spiritual exercises and thus subjected himself to self-mortification (Mushahadat) for long number of hours daily which continued for 7 long years. With the grace of his Spiritual Master he attained self-realisation at the age of 30 years only in the year 1945.
Sri Appagaru revealed his spiritual experiences in the form of beautiful poetry in Telugu, Hindi and also ghazals in Urdu.
Peer-o-Murshid of Sri Appagaru, Hazrat Khwaja Nayab chishti attained martyrdom (Shahadat) in “police action” by the Indian military forces in 1948 following complaints to the military commander that he was converting Hindus into Muslims which was not true. Out of unbounded love, he was initiating the people who flocked to him in to the Chishtia Order, sharing their joys and sorrows and guiding them in the spiritual path, irrespective of their religious affiliations. Saints of Chishtia Order in the Indian subcontinent never discriminated on the basis of religion and blessed the people of all religions who came to their Khanqas (Hospice) with love and affection.
Sri Appagaru constructed a Sacred memorial (chilla) consisting of holy relics of his Spiritual Master in his own land where the holy shrine of pujyamother (his wife, PeeraniMa) was already existing. She was a pious and spiritually enlightened lady. Sri Appagaru used to perform Annual “Urs” celebrations of his Spiritual Master, Hazrat Ghulam Rasool Khwaja Nayab Chisht Linga Shahid-e-Naaz Qalander-e-Mirzai both at Pahad-e-Nayab, Burugupally Sharif village, near Vikarabad Dist, then Hyderabad district, where the holy shrine (Darga Sharif) was existing and also Chilla Sharif at Hunnapur.
Large number of people flocked to Sri Appagaru and became his disciples. Mean while few traditional Hindus and Politicians including the Local Member of Legislative Assembly of Andole Constituency, complained to the Hyderabad State Government that theHindus were being converted to Muslims. The Telugu and Urdu news papers published from Hyderabad city carried scandalous allegationsand reports that Sri Appagaru started a new religion known as “ChistiLinga” religion and was converting the Hindus. They carried concocted stories and published in their news papers in the years 1954&55 without any verification of the facts. The district collector who personally conducted an enquiry as per the instructions of the Deputy Home Minister of Hyderabad State Government found the allegations baseless and untrue and furnished a report to Govt.
When the annual “Urs Sharif” was to be performed in Feb, 1955 Hunnapur, a section of Hindus determined to prevent the “Urs” being performed erected a Linga in the near-by site with an ostensible purpose of celebrating Basava Jayanthi (birthday) and started staging dramas and singing songs ridiculing Sri Appagaru and others. The district collector and other officials, who were camping at site, could see the mischief being created and sent the police to arrest the organisers. They fled from the village before the police could arrest them. Later “Urs” celebrations were performed without any hindrance.
In the year 1954 Sri Appagaru endowed his entire property and houses at Hunnapur Sharif to the state wakf board. He appointed a “Mutawalli” Manager to manage the property and spend the income there of for the upkeep of the holy shrines and provide free food and accommodation to the pilgrims who came to pray at the holy shrines. Later Sri Appagaru renounced and left his native village leaving even the house hold articles to the care of the Mutawalli. He established an ashram (Hospice) by constructing a hut with bamboo ‘thattis’ mesh, mud and thatched roof with the help of his close disciples at Vatpally village, Andole taluk (Alladurg Mandal) in Medak District.
Sri Appagaru spread spiritual message to one and all as enunciated by the great Sufi Saints of Chishtia Order. The Asthana or the Khanqa Sharif named as Astan-e-Alia, Chamanistan-e-Khwajai, Khwaja Nayab Dham, Chishti Linga Nilayam at Vatpally village became a famous centre for spiritual learning with Sri Appagaru in his resplendent form, who was verily the personification of deity to his disciples, radiating spirituality to all the people irrespective of their caste, creed and religious affiliations.
